Meet SGT1 (V) Jeffrey Tan, a volunteer firefighter in the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) who holds three portfolios in his career. Besides being a Senior Healthcare Executive at the Healthcare Support Services and an Assistant Operations Manager at Certis CISCO, Jeffrey is also a Discipline Master at the Republic Polytechnic.
Chun Ju joined the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) in 2015 when he was pursuing his full-time degree in Computer Science at the National Technological University (NTU). Despite being a full-time web developer now, Chun Ju still actively commits two days per week as a volunteer medic at Alexandra Fire Station. A nurse’s mission is not just to save lives but to preserve the quality of life. Volunteer medic SGT1 (V) Guo Bing is a professional nurse who holds this mission close to her heart. After graduating with a Nursing Diploma in 2002, Guo Bing started her career as a nurse and later, joined the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) in 2017. More than five years ago, SGT1 (V) Muhammad Zainal Abidin was enlisted for National Service (NS) along with many other Singaporean males around the age of 18 years old. “When I was first enlisted, I did not see the importance of serving NS and in fact, I was reluctant to participate fully during the training,” said Zainal, 26, as he recalled his experience as a full-time National Serviceman (NSF) with SCDF. SCDF held its first Civil Defence (CD) Volunteer Gala Nite on 19 July 2019 to honour and acknowledge the contributions of CD volunteers and celebrate the 150th year of volunteerism in civil defence. The gala dinner was held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, where over 400 SCDF volunteers and Community First Responders (CFRs) attended this milestone event in SCDF’s history.
