On 12 March 2020, the Civil Defence Lionhearter (CDLH) Club at Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD) clinched the Jyoti and Aditya Mathur Student Achievement Award for being the Outstanding Student Organisation at SUTD. The Student Achievement Award recognises students who had brought honour to the University by demonstrating exceptional performance in their Fifth Row activities and contributed positively towards the quality and vibrancy of campus life by impacting the SUTD community positively.
Adam Idris Lim Wei, a second-year student at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), is the President of the school’s Civil Defence (CD) Lionhearter Club and an SCDF scholar with a curious and innovative mind. Adam joined the Lionhearter Club in his first year as he wanted to contribute to society in a meaningful way by applying his first-aid skillsets which he honed during his National Service with the SCDF.
Bright eyed, excited and freshly minted LTA (NSF) Aveek Goswami reported for duty on his first day keen to learn and do a good job in leading a platoon of men as a Rota Commander in SCDF’s Special Rescue Unit (SRU). He has heard much about SRU and how it was recognised as the crack troops of SCDF. The SRU specialises in decontamination, large fire and rescue operations and mass casualty ambulance conveyance. It is always ready 24/7.
Madam Tang Lin Yok, a 64-year-old Merdeka Generation nurse who is now an Assistant Director of Nursing at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. She has spent more than 40 years of her career with a mission to save lives and preserve the quality of life.
The 2019 Singapore-Global Firefighters and Paramedic Challenge (SGFPC) consists of three categories of competition namely, the Global Challenge, Singapore Challenge, and Public Challenge. This year, SCDF and 13 international teams participated in the Global Challenge category.
Volunteer Fire and Rescue Specialist (FRS), LTA (V) Lin Jiawei, 27, together with his colleagues from the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU), fought the massive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility fire at Jalan Buroh on the Friday evening of 21 June 2019. As he approached the scorching heat and thick smoke that blurred his vision momentarily, Jiawei recalled hearing the loud sound of explosions and the sight of flying LPG canisters. “To be honest, I was afraid of the scale of fire and the danger it posed,” said Jiawei. “However, it was my duty as a trained FRS to put out the fire, I had to put aside my fear no matter what and confront the inferno.” Read more of the article here...
“Fire in 5th floor unit. Someone trapped inside.” That was the message routed to the Rota on shift at Jurong Fire Station on the night of 18th August 2019. Two fire bikes, two fire engines, a Red Rhino and a combined platform ladder were immediately dispatched to the scene at Block 158 Yung Loh Road. Read more of this story here...
Meet SCDF’s full-time National Serviceman (NSF) PTE Jastine Tan, a winner of not one but two prestigious awards at a recent short film competition hosted by cINE65. cINE65 is an initiative launched by Nexus in July 2011 with an aim to capture our Singaporean identity through the lenses of local aspiring filmmakers. Jastine’s short film entitled, ‘My Homeland: A Photography Project by Grandpa Chen’ was awarded the Best Overall Film and the Movies Makers Award. Jastine is an active member of the SCDF’s Media Production Unit (MPU), Corporate Communications Department (CCD). If you think that being a volunteer in two Home Team departments is impossible, then one Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDAU) officer has made the impossible possible. Meet SGT1 (V) Leow Yong Tai, 37, an auxiliary firefighter with the SCDF and a Police volunteer special constabulary (VSC)[1] , who works full-time as a Human Resource professional in a Multi-National Corporation (MNC). SGT2 (V) Eugene Seah, 24, did not walk the path of ordinary undergraduates whose main focus is typically to first get a degree and then a job.
