For the first time since our nation’s independence, the National Day Parade (NDP) was held virtually across the island, as the nation unites in our fight against COVID-19. One of the highlights of this year’s NDP was the Maritime Sailpast where the Life Saving Force showcased three of its marine firefighting vessels. Two of these vessels, the Heavy Fire Vessel (Red Sailfish) and the Heavy Rescue Vessel (Red Manta), were commissioned on 20 August last year, marking a giant leap in our operational capability in maritime firefighting.
Mr Amrin Amin, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Health, during his visit to SCDF’s Operations Centre and Paya Lebar Fire Station on 12 February 2020, thanked SCDF personnel for stepping up and rising to the call to serve Singapore in this time of crisis. These included those screening passengers at the airport, swabbing those placed under quarantine, and conveying suspected cases to hospitals.
On 16 February 2020, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance visited Kallang Fire Station, where he met and interacted with about 30 regular officers and Full-time National Servicemen. The group of officers comprised of personnel from SCDF’s Operations Centre, Emergency Medical Services, Special Rescue Unit, 2nd SCDF Division and the swabbing teams involved in the operations at government quarantine facilities.
On 11 January 2020, SCDF organised an exclusive guided tour of the MRT Civil Defence (CD) Shelter at Woodlands MRT Station. The event was graced by Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport. On 4th January 2020, Banyan Fire Station held its 10th year anniversary which coincided with its official operationalisation date exactly a decade ago. The event commemorates past contributions of the pioneer batches of Banyan Fire Station personnel, as well as to celebrate the current achievements of the present serving personnel.
On 5 February 2020, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) hosted a team of officers from SCDF HQ at three of the school’s faculties, namely, the School of Design: Digital Film & Television, School of Business: Communications & Media Management, and School of Informatics & IT: Serious Games Hub. The visit provided an opportunity for CCD to foster a collaborative partnership with TP, and to have a good overview of TP’s course curriculums and teaching methodology.
At 5.57am on 11 December 2019, SCDF received a call on a fire at No. 48 Tuas Crescent. Mere streets away from the incident, the personnel from Rota 2 of Tuas Fire Station swung into action. A thick column of black smoke rising into the still dark sky marked their destination. Within four minutes of the fire being reported, SCDF was at the scene.
SCDF displayed the latest generation of the SCDF Pump Ladder at the 2019 Home Team Festival, which was held from 22 to 24 November at the Singapore Expo.
On 21 November 2019, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) organised the inaugural First Responders Safety & Performance Symposium (FRSPS) at the Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre. Temasek Foundation was SCDF’s strategic partner for this symposium. Concurrently, SCDF co-curated the academic programme for this symposium with its knowledge partner, the Department of Physiology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).
From 18 to 20 November 2019, SCDF organised the International Elite Rescuers Exchange (IERE) Workshop at the Home Team Tactical Centre. In this three-day event, emergency services personnel from different countries gathered for a fruitful exchange of training skills and knowledge. Participants were engaged through various exercises to gain insights into one another’s modus operandi.
