Hero banner for Joint News Release on Launch of Online Poll on Differentiated Licence Plates for Electric Vehicles

          The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will launch an online poll for owners of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) to indicate their preference for a differentiated EV licence plate design. There are three shortlisted designs to choose from.

2        LTA and SCDF intend to introduce differentiated licence plates for EVs, including PHEVs. This enables first responders and members of the public to identify EVs on the road more expeditiously. As EVs present distinct safety considerations in an accident or fire, this ready identification will support emergency response efforts and help those at the scene respond appropriately – for example, keeping a safe distance from potential battery hazards.

3        In March 2026, LTA and SCDF consulted stakeholders, such as authorised motor dealers and signcraft workshops, on differentiated licence plate designs featuring three variations of green. Views were also received from individual motorists. Respondents understood the operational need for differentiated licence plates, but some raised concerns about the aesthetics of the proposed green designs.

4        Taking industry and public feedback into consideration, LTA and SCDF continued to explore a range of other designs. When considered in the context of Singapore’s existing licence plate specifications, some of the designs were assessed to be unsuitable as the visibility of the vehicle number was not optimal. For example, a coloured side band would require the vehicle number to be displayed in a smaller font to accommodate the band and would not be feasible for double row¹ licence plates.

5        LTA and SCDF have come up with more options suitable for our local road conditions. They feature two different shades of blue which are visible in both daylight and low-light conditions. They are also easily recognisable by members of public, first responders and compatible with traffic and enforcement cameras. The proposed updated designs are appended in the Annex.

6        The online poll for EV and PHEV owners will feature one of the original green designs and the two new blue designs. The poll will be available on the OneMotoring website from 25 September to 9 October 2026. EV and PHEV owners are encouraged to look out for a banner on the Onemotoring website, which contains a link to a FormSG poll where they can log in with their SingPass to submit their preferred design.

7        As the differentiated licence plates will directly affect EV and PHEV owners, only votes from registered EV and PHEV owners will be considered in the final tally. Each registered owner, whether an individual or a company, may submit one vote. For multiple votes, only the last vote received will be considered. Owners voting in both a personal and a company capacity may submit one vote for each.

8        LTA and SCDF appreciate that the public has been supportive of the need to have differentiated license plates for EVs and PHEVs. We encourage all registered EV and PHEV owners to submit their preferred design during the polling period. Owners’ preferences will be taken into consideration as part of the final design selection process.
