Chiang Mai, Forest Fire (2015)

A major forest fire broke out in Chiang Mai, Thailand in March 2015.

On 18 March 2015, SCDF deployed a 6-man team to Chiang Mai, Thailand to assist the local authorities in fighting the forest fire.

During the team’s deployment they operated the SCDF’s 5000 Litre Heli-bucket* together with the crew of an RSAF Chinook helicopter. On certain missions, they had to operate at a terrain as high as 7,000ft and in low visibility due to the haze.

The team concluded its mission and returned to Singapore on 1 April. In all, a total of 17 sorties/ 35 hours were flown with about 200,000L of water dropped off the affected areas.

*The Heli-bucket is a collapsible water dispenser slung underneath a helicopter. Water is collected from an open source such as a reservoir, lake or sea, and discharged from the base of the bucket when the release button is pressed.
