27 Mar 2009The CDA celebrated its 10th anniversary. The Guest-of-Honour Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, launched a time capsule. To be opened only in 2034, the capsule captures the significant milestones in the CDA over the last decade.
27 Mar 2009The 15th CD Skills Competition was held at the Basic Rescue Training Centre. Participants came from Brunei, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand, with Cambodia as an observer for the first time in this event.
04 Apr 2009The Shelter Open House 2009 was held simultaneously at three CCL MRT (Circle Line Mass Rapid Transit) stations, the Bartley, Lorong Chuan and Bishan stations, to give the public a rare insight into the shelter provisions. These included the protective blast doors, decontamination chambers, stationary CCL trains serving as shelter berths, flexible ventilation ducts, dry toilets and shelteree occupation areas. About 11,205 people turned up for the event.
15 Apr 2009The SCDF enhances its Emergency Ambulance Service (EAS) with the implementation of its new Medical Protocol System (MPS). The MPS incorporates a template of medical queries to allow the call-taker to diagnose the patients’ conditions and even provide useful medical instructions prior to the arrival of the ambulance. Advisory is also given to the paramedic enroute to the incident site.
04 - 08 May 2009The SCDF participated in the first ASEAN Regional Forum Volunteer Display of Response on Disaster Relief Exercise in the Philippines. This civil-military exercise was based on a scenario of a category-five typhoon with catastrophic consequences.
15 May 2009In partnership with COSEM (Cooperative of SCDF Employees), CDA successfully conducted the inaugural UN INSARAG (International Search and Rescue Advisory Group) External Classification Course for 35 officers of the Abu Dhabi Police from the United Arab Emirates. The course prepared them to attain the medium USAR Team status.
15 May 2009The new Mini LFAV (Light Fire Attack Vehicle) was launched by DPM and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Wong Kan Seng, when he graced the SCDF Workplan Seminar held at CDA as the Guest-of-Honour. The other innovation highlights featured in the extensive exhibition segment included the Hazmat Mitigation Vehicle (HMV) and the Backpack Water Mist Gun.
19 May 2009After 17 years at the helm, Comr James Tan handed over the command of the SCDF to DC Peter Lim, at the Change-of-Command Parade held at BRTC. Mr Benny Lim, Permanent Secretary (Home Affairs), presented Comr Tan with a Successful Command Plague in appreciation of his exemplary services to the SCDF.
30 May 2009The NCDCC (National Civil Defence Cadet Corps) held its inaugural parade at BRTC, graced by Mr Charles Chong, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.
01 Jun 2009Ten ambulances from two Private Ambulance Operators, Lentor Ambulance Pte Ltd and Unistrong Technology (S) Pte Ltd, commence their operations as part of the SCDF Emergency Ambulance Service (EAS). Deployed at ten fire stations across the island, they operate daily from 0800hrs to 2000 hrs, except on Sundays.
11 Jun 2009LTC Lee Yam Ming handed over the reins of command of 3rd CD Division to LTC Abdul Razak.
19 Jun 2009A new Diploma in Fire Safety Engineering was launched at a ceremony held at the Heritage Gallery. The course aims to equip participants to meet the new challenges posed by the development of complex and uniquely-designed building projects in Singapore.
06, 07, 15 Jul 2009SCDF participated in Exercise Northstar VII, which was conducted in two phases, with phase one on 6 and 7 July 2009 and phase two on 15 July. Based on the scenario of coordinated seaborne terrorist attacks akin to the Mumbai attacks in November 2008, ten incidents took place at various landmarks such as the Raffles Place MRT Station, VivoCity Shopping Mall and the Rasa Sentosa Resort, involving 2,000 personnel from 15 agencies.
15 Jul 2009Comr Peter Lim launched the SCDF InnoventureClub in Sentosa. It was formed by 30 officers with exemplary track records in participation in innovation-related activities. Club members are given exposure to innovation projects and would be groomed with creativity and innovation skills.
3 Aug 2009At the NFEC (National Fire and Civil Emergency Preparedness Council) Seminar 2009 at Concorde Hotel, Comr Peter Lim launched the “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) Outreach Programme. The month-long “ICE” campaign was held at various shopping malls and MRT stations in September 2009.
12 Aug 2009The CDAU (Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit) Portal was officially launched. It allows CDAU members to update their personal particulars, apply leave and make enquires on core CDAU duties. It also facilitates the recruitment process.
17 - 21 Aug 2009SCDF hosted the ACDM (ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management) Working Group on Risk Assessment, Monitoring and Early Warning Meeting, at HQ 2nd CD Division. The meeting was initiated to identify gaps and future challenges pertaining to disaster risk assessment and monitoring in the ASEAN region, and to chart the strategic framework for the next five years.
01 Sep 2009The Central Fire Station Centenary Celebration was held at the station itself. Graced by Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, the event was also a fund-raising dinner, with $26,000 raised for a SCDF-adopted charity, the St Andrew’s Cathedral Home for the Aged. A month-long Photography Competition and Children’s Drawing Competition were held in the station in September 2009 as part of the centenary celebration.
08 Sep 2009Comr Peter Lim officially opened the Music and Performance Art Club (MPAC) Studio at BRTC on 8 September 2009. MPAC serves to nurture the music and performing arts talents among our NSFs and regulars.
15 Sep 2009The Civil Defence Day Parade, held at BRTC, was graced by Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee. NCDCC cadets participated in the parade for the first time. Professor Ho unveiled “FireFLY” as the name for Mini LFAV, which was one of the latest SCDF innovations. The naming contest was open to the public in August 2009, with Ms Joyce Chiong Si Hui clinching the grand prize of $1,000.
25 – 27 Sep 2009Singapore successfully hosted the second SingTel-Formula 1 Night Race from 25 to 27 September 2009, with SCDF deploying 600 personnel and 65 appliances to provide emergency response services.
01 Oct 2009A contract signing ceremony between SCDF and ST Electronics (Info-Software Systems) Pte Ltd was held at HomeTeam NS @ Bukit Batok. ST Electronics Pte Ltd had been awarded the $34 million contract to provide the next generation command and control system for SCDF, called the Advanced C³ (Command, Control and Communication) Emergency System, or ACES.
02 - 08 Oct 2009Following a massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake and another 6.8-magnitude aftershock which struck Padang, Indonesia on 30 September and 1 October 2009 respectively, SCDF deployed a 42-strong SCDF rescue contingent to Padang
13 – 15 Oct 2009Six Civil Defence (CD) Lionhearters from the Singapore Polytechnic CD Lionhearter Club were deployed to the earthquake-hit Pariaman in Sumatra, as part of the Mercy Relief overseas humanitarian relief and reconstruction mission.
15 Oct 2009The Central Enforcement Department became operational, offering a “one-stop solution” for the issuance and management of certifications, licences and enforcement actions.
21 to 23 Oct 2009SCDF hosted the inaugural ASEAN Seminar on CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives) Consequence Management, at the Grand Corpthorne Waterfront Hotel.
27 Oct 2009The CD (Civil Defence) Lionhearter Club was launched in Singapore Polytechnic. The CD Lionhearters would be trained in emergency response skills, be involved in SCDF outreach programmes, and function as Community Engagement Ambassadors to mitigate communal tensions on campus grounds. It was the first SCDF engagement of tertiary students in civil defence issues.
29 Oct – 01 Nov 2009SCDF, Singapore Police Force (SPF) and HQ Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) organised the inaugural Homefront Security Ambassador Camp 2009 at the National Community Leadership Institute. 60 students from 13 secondary schools within the Home Team Eastern Sector were taught the skills and knowledge of the community outreach programmes of SCDF, SPF and MHA. These are Community Emergency Preparedness Programme, Crime Prevention Programme and Community Engagement Programme respectively.
01 Nov 2009At the National Day Awards Investiture at NUS Cultural Centre on, H.E. President S R Nathan presented the Meritorious Service Medal to Mr James Tan, Ex-Commissioner SCDF. Mr Heng Chai Liang was awarded the Public administration Medal (Bronze). Professor V Anantharaman, Chairman of the SCDF Medical Advisory Committee was presented the Public Service Medal.
8 - 15 Nov 2009670 SCDF personnel were on standby to provide emergency response coverage for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which featured eminent leaders from the Asia Pacific region.
12 Nov 200918 SCDF operations received the Minister’s Award for Operational Excellence for their professionalism and achievements in mounting successful operations.
19 Nov 2009The Music and Performance Art Club successfully held the “NSF’s Got Talent” Competition on in BRTC, which showcased many budding talents in SCDF.
25 Nov 2009115 SCDF officers were honoured at the Investiture of the 2009 National Day Awards and the SCDF Overseas Service Medal. One officer was awarded the Commendation Medal, six were awarded the Efficiency Medal, 63 were awarded the Long Service Medal and 45 were awarded the SCDF Overseas Service Medal.
07 Dec 2009SCDF cleans the Lower Seletar Reservoir, commencing the “SCDF Waters Programme” in which it adopts waterways and reservoirs for quarterly clean-ups and maintenance.
