  Pride & Care Award

To encourage and recognise acts of Pride & Care in SCDF, Pride & Care Awards are given out regularly to deserving staff and personnel. These may include selfless, heroic acts during the course of duty, but more often than not, our Pride & Care heroes were awarded for their generous and caring actions performed while they were off duty, and out of uniform.

The following are the nominees for Pride & Care Star Award 2007 :-

1. SGT Lim Kuan Yew (Ang Mo Kio Fire Station)

On 26 March 2006 at 1945 hours, apart from the other fire appliances, an ambulance led by SGT Lim Kuan Yew, responded to a fire at Toa Payoh Lorong 8. Due to the immense amount of smoke and the total blackout of the entire block, all the residents had self-evacuated. Besides attending to the evacuees suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, SGT Lim also shuttled between the higher floors to assist residents who had problems coming down.

When the situation normalised later that night, though the lifts remained inoperable, residents decided to return to their flats on foot. At around midnight, a frail old lady and her son decided to proceed up to their 20th storey unit via the staircase without further waiting. SGT Lim accompanied them as the son piggybacked his elderly mother upstairs. At the 10th storey, the son was too worn out to continue, and SGT Lim took over to carry the old lady the rest of the way. SGT Lim’s shift was supposed to end at 2100hrs but he remained at scene until 0100hrs. Despite feeling the fatigue from working beyond normal shift hours, SGT Lim still displayed the core value of "CARE" in his actions during the incident. It is evident that he truly cares for those that he serves, being vigilant and proactively assisting in any way he could to the affected residents of the incident block.

2. SSG Md Affan Bin Md Noor (Yishun Fire Station)

SSG Md Affan Bin Md Noor

On 01 Feb 2007 at about 1840hrs, the crew from Yishun Fire Station responded for an incident of HDB unit on fire at Block 836, Yishun St 81. Upon arrival at scene, the fire was well alight and was also heavily smoke logged. The members of public at scene also informed the crew that there was a boy trapped in the kitchen of the affected unit. Upon hearing that, Section Commander SSG Md Affan Bin Md Noor reacted quickly and pitched a ladder to the unit’s kitchen with the assistance of his fire fighter.

He wasted no time to ascend the ladder to the affected unit, only to realize that the window grille of the kitchen was locked. SSG Affan remained calm and ordered for a crowbar to be brought to him. He then swiftly forced open the window grilles to the kitchen and entered the affected unit to look for the boy. Noticing that the boy was still conscious, SSG Affan instructed the boy to cling on tightly to himself before he descended the ladder to the ground floor. During this incident, SSG Affan displayed decisiveness, bravery and professionalism. As a result of his quick actions, the trapped boy managed to escape unscathed with only some mild smoke inhalation. SSG Affan’s brave act was captured in a video clip by a member of public who had also posted it on the ‘STOMP’ website. SSG Affan has certainly demonstrated SCDF’s value of Pride and Care in his exemplary act of bravery.

Knowing that their fellow colleagues from Ang Mo Kio Fire Station would be responding to this incident and that the fire was in danger of spreading, they decided to assist their colleagues.

Both NSFs sourced for the nearest hydrant before the arrival of the responding crew so that water supply could be immediately established upon their arrival. When the fire appliance arrived, they guided the crew to the location of the fire and helped lay hoses from the hydrant to the appliance. Through their help, the responding crew were able to proceed to the burning unit much more quickly. The NSFs also helped carry fire fighting equipment up the flat and helped evacuate the residents to safety. Both of them contributed to the quick evacuation of the residents and extinguishing of the fire, thus preventing further damage to lives and properties.

4. WO Azahree Bin Arsad (Tampines Fire Station)

WO Azahree Bin Arsad

When his staff SGT Firdaus was warded in hospital from May to June 2006 for a rare disease, Deputy Rota Commander (DRC) WO Azharee Bin Arsad visited him almost daily without fail. As the expenses from the costly medicine and length of stay in the high dependence ward were high, he garnered financial aid from the Rota to SGT Firdaus' family. In addition, he also helped the family to apply for insurance claims through SCDF. Furthermore, WO Azahree also offered emotional support through the engagement of SCDF CARE Officers, to ensure the family's emotional well-being would be well taken care of.

In ensuring that the family's financial and emotional needs are taken care of, WO Azahree did everything within his means to help them. Throughout this period of time, WO Azahree sacrificed a great amount of personal time and has shown concern for the men under his command.

5. WO Mohd Ashari Bin Mohd Sultan (Jurong Fire Station)

On 19 Dec 2006 at 1000 hrs, WO Mohd Ashari Bin Mohd Sultan responded to an unattended cooking incident at Parc Vista Condominium. The affected unit was locked and he could have gained forcible entry into the unit by simply breaking the main door. Instead, he decided to enter the unit by climbing over the parapet through the kitchen window after finding an alternative entry point so as not to damage the main door.

Sensing something amiss, she shouted at him and gave chase when the suspect tried to run away from the scene. PTE Md Ramadan held on to the suspect and waited until the arrival of the police.

His selflessness and bravery was highly praised by Mdm Neo and the public at scene, and Mdm Neo later wrote in to commend PTE Md Ramadan on his actions. PTE Ramadan has done SCDF proud and has truly demonstrated the values of Pride and Care.
