  Servicing Portable Fire Extinguishers  
     
 

Under the Singapore Standard, Code of Practice 55, Use and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers, the owner or occupant of a premises is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the fire extinguishers installed in the premises. This is to ensure that the fire extinguishers are in good working order.

The maintenance and servicing of portable extinguishers can only be carried out by qualified and trained persons in proper workshops of a company. Click on the link to check out the list of workshops certified by SCDF for the servicing and maintenance of fire extinguishers.

 
     
     
 

Criteria for Companies who wish to be certified by SCDF

 
 
  1. The Company must register with the Registry of Companies.
  2. The Company has a valid Factory Permit issued by the Occupational Safety Department of the Ministry of Manpower.
  3. The Company has an operator with a valid trade test certificate issued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
  4. The Company possesses the facilities (workshop) as required by the Singapore Civil Defence Force for the servicing and maintenance of the portable fire extinguishers.
  5. The Company services and maintains the portable fire extinguishers within the registered workshop address.

Such workshops are required to have the proper equipment, tools, recharge materials, etc. See checklist required for such workshops.

Companies who want their workshop to be certified by SCDF should write to:

Fire Safety & Shelter Department will thereafter request for the documents and arrange for an inspection of the workshop. A fee of $140 is currently charged for the inspection. The documents to be submitted are:

  1. Photocopy of the NRIC of the qualified operator.
  2. Photocopy of the valid trade test certificate of the qualified operator.
  3. Photocopy of the Registration of Company and Business (Form 9 or Form K and Computer Information Business Profile) issued by the Ministry of Finance.
  4. Photocopy of the Factory Permit issued by the Ministry of Manpower.
  5. Detailed layout plan of the workshop arrangement.
  6. Photocopy of the certificate for calibration of weighing machines.
  7. Photocopy of the certificate of inspection by the Professional Engineer for the air compressor.
  8. Photographs of the equipment listed in the inspection checklist

The certificate will be issued by SCDF after the workshop has passed the inspection. It will be valid for a period of 2 years and the company should re-apply for the certification of the workshop before the expiry date.

Note: SCDF shall not be liable for any mishap arising from the servicing or maintenance of the portable fire extinguishers.
